Youthpreneur  Breakout  Session

Empowerment, Passion and Purpose
Presenter: Chental-Song Bembry

Chental-Song Bembry is 15 years old and is currently a sophomore in high school. Chental is the author and illustrator of The Honey Bunch Kids, a series of entertaining and educational chapter books for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 12. Chental developed a passion for writing when she was in the fourth grade. She began developing the characters in The Honey Bunch Kids in 2006.

The first book, titled The Honey Bunch Kids, was published in 2010. Her mom thought it would be a great idea to meet more young people in business. In 2011, Chental attended the Black Enterprise Youth Entrepreneur’s Conference. While there, she won a sales pitch competition through 100 Urban Entrepreneurs, the prize was $10,000 to improve her business, along with one on one mentoring with industry experts. News of her accomplishment with The Honey Bunch Kids resulted in her being selected as the Youth Ambassador for two literacy organizations; Literacy Nation and Mission EduCare. Her books have also been selected as Book of the Month for Little Sistah’s In the Know, a national book club. Chental’s church, 1st Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens has also been very supportive of her project, and have given her several book signings.

In February 2012, Chental received the Hometown Hero Award for Black History Month from the New Jersey Nets. Her relationship with Black Enterprise continues to grow, as Chental was asked to be one of Black Enterprise’s Teenpreneur Ambassadors. Black Enterprise has been a great supporter of hers, with two articles listing her as Entrepreneur of the Week.

Most recently, in July, Chental spoke as a panelist at the 2012 National Urban League Conference in the Youth Town Hall. Her focus was on education and empowerment. Chental won a Teen Peer Pressure Challenge, sponsored by The Three Doctors Foundation. In her project, she identified a problem in the community (poor reading scores in children), and a solution. The solution is to initiate a literacy campaign, encouraging kids to read more, which is part of what she is doing through The Honey Bunch Kids. She will be honored at their annual gala in August.
As a businessperson, Chental realizes the importance of community service. Whenever she does author appearances, she is serving her community, sharing how being a big reader has helped her become a successful student. It is her hope that she inspires children to set goals, love reading, stay focused, care about each other and to always believe in themselves. Chental is involved in her church, and looks forward to the annual FBC Back-To-School Block Party. Her organization, The Honey Bunch Kids, donates book bags and school supplies. Throughout the school year, Chental participates in many vendor fairs, library presentations on literacy, and school visits. During the summer, she attends business camp through Youth About Business.

In the future, Chental plans to graduate from college with a focus on business/writing for film and television. It is her goal to develop The Honey Bunch Kids into a dominant brand, featuring her characters.
